History of Au Bon Pain

The first location of Au Bon Pain was established by Louis Rapuano and Louis Kane in Boston in 1978. Customers were delighted with their food choices proven by the fact that at present, this restaurant chain can be seen throughout the United States, as well as in Thailand, South Korea and India.

The company operating the restaurant went public in 1991. Eight years later, the company sold its Au Bon Pain division to Bruckmann, Rossier, Sherill & Co., which later sold it to Compass Group in 2000.

Another change in ownership happened in 2005. Au Bon Pain management purchased 75 per cent of the company. That left only 25 per cent in the hands of the Compass Group. By 2008, the restaurant can be found in 230 locations in the United States. Many of these restaurants are featured in Macy’s and Walmart department stores.

There were two basic operations of Au Bon Pain: the company owned stores, and the franchised stores. Most stores located in the northeastern United States are company-operated. International locations featured in Walmart and Macy’s are usually franchised.

A lot of Au Bon Pain stores are located where there is high consumer traffic such as train stations airports, shopping centers, business districts, and hospitals. Au Bon Pain has also experienced huge success in their stores located at college campuses. Currently, the President and CEO of this restaurant is Sue Morelli.
